Government nutritional standards for primary school lunches.
There are two sets of standards for school lunches, these being:-
a)
Food-based standards which define the types of foods and their frequency
provided at lunch times in schools.
b) Nutrient-based standards where the school lunch should meet 14 key nutrients specific for this age group.
Sodexo menus all comply fully with both of these two sets of standards.
What does the standard state and how does this affect our menus?
Food based standards
Fruit and vegetables – to provide no less than two portions each day.
Fish – to provide an oily fish such as salmon, tuna, mackerel at least once every three weeks.
Meat products such as burger, hamburger, chopped meat, corned beef should be offered no more than once a fortnight.
Meat products such as sausage, sausage meat, chipolata, luncheon meat should be offered no more than once a fortnight.
Meat products such as individual meat pie, meat pudding, scotch pie, pasty, sausage roll should be offered no more than once a fortnight.
Meat products such as any shaped or coated meat products should be offered no more than once a fortnight.
Starchy foods such as bread, potato, rice, pasta, cous cous – when provided should not be cooked in fat or oil more than three times a week.
Bread – additional bread should be provided for children requiring extra energy.
Deep fried foods – should be limited to no more than twice a week.
Salt / Condiments – salt should not be available and condiments only provided as individual sachets or portions.
Snacks / Confectionery – must not be provided in schools except for savoury crackers or breadsticks provided as part of the school lunch.
Cakes / Biscuits – can only be served at lunchtime.
Drinks - only the permitted list of healthier drinks should be provided. These include plain water, pure fruit juice, semi skimmed or skimmed milk, calcium enriched soya, rice or oat drinks.
Nutrient based standards
Sodexo menus have been nutritionally analysed using the most up to date nutrient data base and do comply with the government’s minimum and maximum requirements to 14 key nutrients.
